The International Summer Course for Practical Agricultural Sciences towards Regional Sustainability (PARS)
“Sustainable Integrated Agricultural System in Tropical Area”

The International Summer Course is a part of an annual short-term International trans-mobility program which initiated by Ibaraki University (IU) and Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) SINCE 2005. The Summer Course is annually held in IPB and the Winter Course is annually held in IU. Since year 2008, some students from University of Tsukuba were also participated, and since 2010 some students from University of the Ryukyus were also participated, in 2011 another student from Ehime University was participated, and then in 2013 student from Tokyo University of Agriculture & Technology (TUAT) and Nihon University is also participated. The activities in the program consists lectures from IPB and Japan Professors, student seminar and poster presentation, field and lab work, excursion and group presentation and discussion.
Student course in Bogor is one of collaboration programs between Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) and several universities from Japan’s: IU, University of the Ryukyus, Tokyo University of Agric. & Tech (TUAT), Kagawa University, and Ehime University. On the Summer Course program 2014 in Bogor was followed by 33 graduate students from IPB (from 6 faculties, 17 majors) and also 10 lecturers from IPB. Ibaraki University was followed by 3 students and 3 lectures. University of the Ryukyus was followed by 3 students and 1 lecturer. Tokyo University of Agric. & Tech (TUAT) was followed by 6 students. Kagawa University was followed by 2 students, and Ehime University followed by 1 Students. Work team in this program was designed by field major, divided on the four groups include Indonesian and Japan Students per group. The Team consists of 9 or 10 students will be team work during the following activities.
The Coordinator of this program were coordinated by 2 great sensei, they are Dr. M. Faiz Syuaib from IPB and Dr. Nobuo Sakagami from IU. Lectures from IPB and Japan Sensei were talked about Sustainbility Agriculture. Student seminar was followed by the summer course participant. All students ere encouraged to have poster and oral presentation of their research in master program. Field and lab work activities was held at Saung Sawah (organic and anorganic paddy field) and at JASTRU Experimental Field in Jonggol (pasture, sheep, and buffalo husbandary). Group presentation and discussion was held in. Landhuis, Class, also in Jonggol. In the last day all of the group should make a group presentation and discuss with other groups member.
Supported event of each students were expected to be able to study the sustainability of agriculture that developed at this time as well as being able to communicate using the English language everyday during follow the activities. In addition, expected to add insight and knowledge from two different countries, namely Indonesia and Japan both in terms of language and culture.
September 18th, 2014
I called the first day as “Happy Sunbathing day”. In the morning at 07.00 am all of the participant gathered in Land Huis. We had a simple introduction with other students from IPB and also student from Japan. Student from Japan actually arrived in Bogor at September 17th , I thought that they were jet lag but still happy. I am also one of the participant that felt impressed with Japanese students that recently I know. They had a funny speech. In the first day, I also got a nametag. I felt happy to join this program, since two years ago I want to join but I can’t. This semester is my last chance to join this program. I felt happy. Before we went to Saung Sawah and did practical work, Sakagami sensei gave an explanation about what we have to do in the group.
We walked from Land Huis to the Saung sawah. Along the way to Saung Sawah we introduced about IPB to Japanese friends. They felt so impressive look for the large area inside campus. Yuya asked to me anything about IPB, although he already in Bogor from many weeks but he still didn’t know more about campus. After we arrived in Saung sawah, we divided into 4 different plot to take soil sample and then analyze it with Dr. Soil.
September 19th, 2014
I called the second day as “Happy Jonggol Day 1”. At that day quite calm and not so busy as before (on September 18th). We gathered in BNI at 07.00 am and picked up Japanese student in Land Huis and then about 08.00 am our bus left campus to Jonggol. All the way to Jonggol we had a lot of fun in the bus. We arrived in Jonggol about 11.00 am. The committee gave me a nice place to stay during 2 night in Jonggol. We stay in “Wisma Tamu”, the scenery was so awesome in the middle of palm oil plantation and near sheeps pasture. We took a break when other taking Jumat pray. About 13.00 pm we had a sweety lunch with all of the participant and also sensei.
After having Sweety lunch, we gathered in women guest house and we hear overview about Jonggol from Dr. Rudi Afnan Sensei and also Dr. Faiz sensei gave us instruction about palm oil plantation
Afer we had a brief explanation about Jonggol then we went to Palm oil plantation and taking a nice picture together with Group B and also with all of friend.
We had kambing guling party in the Night. Dr. Nahrowi sensei was joined to our event. He came and gave an opening speech to us representing the Dean of Graduate School, Dr. Dahrul Syah sensei
After we hear opening speech from Dr. Nahrowi sensei, we had simple cultural night. We sang Doraemon song together and also we saw several pantomime from Ryukyus University called “Iya iyalah…..”
September 20th, 2014
I called third day as “Happy Jonggol Day 2”. In the morning we heard simple explanation from Windi sensei. She explained to us how to measure carrying capacity and how to know cattle behavior. Its interesting for me. Since I never did that things before. I like had a new knowledge from the beautiful sensei like Mrs. Windi sensei. We took an observation to Lembing sheeps and their mom to know their behavior and also we took an carrying capacity observation to know the potential pasture to feed the cattle (Figure 12). I also took a photo with a staff from IU Arisawa and also I had a cute photo with Lembing. After that we took soil sample in Lembing stable and then analyze that soil with Dr. Soil. In the night we took nice dinner together with friends also after thar we had a simple discussion in each groups.
September 21th, 2014
I called this fourth day as “TMII free day!”. All of us headed to TMII. Took about 2 hours from Jonggol to TMII. We were waiting for the bus came while waiting, we prepared and pack all of our stuff and got ready to check out from Jonggol. At 08.00 am the bus came and we were happy in the way to TMII (Figure 14).
We had so much happiness and all of us share about culture in TMII. We went to Rumah Gadang and saw cultural event in Kalimantan Anjungan. We were happy watching the culture. We saw a traditional dance from Kalimantan. All of us happy (Figure 15). After that we took lunch together and then moved to Botani Square, Bogor.
September 22nd, 2014
I called the fifth day as “On Class Day 1 ”. About 7.00 am we picked up B group member and we walked along Land Huis to the Rectorat. At that day is on class full day, we had some lectures from IPB sensei and also had some student seminar and poster seminar. We hang our poster before the class started.
September 23th, 2014
I called the fifth day as “On Class Day 2”. In that day we also got a lectures from Takeshi Okubo sensei, Sakagami sensei, and other sensei. We had so much new knowledge about sustainable agriculture. We study about Soil, poultry, endrocrinology, irrigation system, and so on. We were happy, thank you sensei. ^^. After lunch and student seminar we were held Cultural evening.
September 24th, 2014
That day was “Sadness and Happiness Day”. Sadness due to this program ended and some of our Japanese friend left from our Campus. They have to back to Japan L. Happiness was because all of us just like a family although we together just for a week. I wish I had more time to know all of them either from Japanese student and also IPB. In that morning we were discussed our field work. Each group have to make presentation. Each group presentation followed by discussion with question and answer session. The material used as a discussion the same for each group, respectively. Discussion of each group are different from each other. Opinion given by each participant summer course was different so the need for alignment of the sensei who also understand the subject of discussion.
After the group presentation, we continue with the closing ceremony, which means that the summer course 2014 event has ended. However, we are already familiar with each other so that there was sadness and the cheerfulness. Take and give present between japanese students and Indonesian students. Give present for the best presenter, the best group, and the best poster. Thanks for friends that gave me so many souvenir. Arigatou….
I am really happy follow and join in the Summer Course 2014. Im really grateful be a part of this program. So many things new I got, not only new friends from IPB and also from Japan but also a lot of experience I had. I learn many things new, culture, language, ideas, habit, knowledge from different study and so on. This is my next experience in International Course, I joined “Syngenta Connection Program 2011” with Australian students. I remember Dr. Faiz sensei ever told to us “May be we have same things to do, but how to do is different….. ” Arigatou gozaimasuu sensei ^_^
I would like to express my thankfulness to Dr. Faiz, Windi sensei, Mrs. Fatma, Dr. Suryo, Dr. Sugiyanta, Dr. Sudrajat, Dr. Purwiyatno, and sensei from Japan (Dr. Sakagami sensei, Prof. Okubo sensei, and other sensei) for supervising in the Summer Course 2014. And I’m very thankful to my parents and my committee members, Dr. Purnama Hidayat and Prof. Damayanti Buchori for supported me to join this program
