The International Winter Course is an annual short-term International trans-mobility program which initiated by University of the Ryukyus 2014. This program was the first program held by University of The Ryukyus. The Winter course Course is held in Okinawa. Last 2014, some students from Khon Kaen University (Thailand) and Bogor Agricultural university (Indonesia) is also participated. The activities in the program consists lectures from Ryukyus, Khon Kaen, and IPB Professors, student seminar, field work, excursion and group presentation and discussion.
The Coordinator of this program were coordinated by some great sensei, they are Sakai sensei and Kawamoto sensei from University of the Ryukyus and also helped by the Agriculture staff in Ryukyus. Lectures from Ryukyus Sensei were talked about Sustainbility Agriculture in Okinawa. Student seminar was followed by the winter course participant. All students ere encouraged to have oral presentation of their research in master or doctoral program. Field work activities was held in Underground dam in Komesu, Farmer market of JA in Itoman, Haebaru Clean Centre, Vegetable Factory, Recycle Centre, and Factory Orion Beer. Group presentation and discussion was held in class. In the last day all of the group should make a group presentation and discuss with other groups member.
Supported event of each students were expected to be able to study the sustainability of agriculture that developed at this time as well as being able to communicate using the English language everyday during follow the activities. In addition, expected to add insight and knowledge from three different countries, namely Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand both in terms of language and culture.
Okinawa is a small island and its environtment is limited. Nowadays, people was so consuming. Therefore the waste treatment and the recycle of many materials is very important and serious problems. Okinawa also had problems with sustainable agriculture. The problems such as the low income for farmers, aging of farmers and there isn’t any young generation to continue the farming. That kind of problems actually not only occur in Okinawa but also in all of the country. There for in this winter course there was some field work in Underground dam in Komesu, Farmer market of JA in Itoman, Haebaru Clean Centre, Vegetable Factory, Recycle Centre, and Factory Orion Beer to know the comprehensive towards sustainable in Okinawa.

That was the first day we arrived in Naha, Okinawa, Japan. Sakai sensei and the staff from Ryukus picked up us and then heading to Campus. Dr. Faiz, Dr Monchai, and IPB students was amaze along the way to the Ryukyus University. That day quite sunny and the bright clouds so that scenery made Okinawa more beautiful. I amaze with the sea scenery near Naha airport. So bright, so clean.
About 16.00 pm we arrived in front of the women dormitory, the staff explain to us about the room and also she gave the brief explanation about rules in the woman dormitory. I am happy to get a one room in the dormitory. It was so clean. I love it. That room is so cozy for study and so conducive for study.
In the night we visited Manik san room. We got closer since we were from same university in IPB. She told us about Ryukyus University. Iam so happy.
December 08th, 2014
In the second day we came to the Agriculture office, in Kawamoto’s sensei room. We get ocha tea, it so warm and so delicious since the weather was cold at that time. Then, about 9.30 am Sakai sensei open the Winter Course program. He tell us about the schedule along the winter corse. And also Kawamoto sensei gave a little welcome speech to us. He told us to enjoy Okinawa.
After the opening speech, we were going to campus tour in Fujukan Museum and also in Turmeric field. Before we going to campus tour we had some nice pictures with all of the sensei and dean. In campus tour, I amaze with the Fujukan Museum. Since I study about insects. There were so many insects collection there. I am familiar enough with all of insect specimen displayed there. Because in my laboratory in IPB also had insects museum. Eventhough not so good as in Ryukyus.
After that we went to the turmeric laboratory to had some lectures from sensei and also after that we went to the turmeric field to know the cultivation of turmeric. Im happy that I can study about turmeric. Its new knowledge for me.
December 09th, 2014
Third day, we went to the Underground dam in Komesu. I never go to the dam like in Komesu. It was so good organizing. We get the brief explanation from the staff. He talked about the function of dam in Komesu, the maintenance, and also the organizing of the dam. It is new knowled for me. I love it.
In the afternoon, we went to the farmer market in Itoman. This market is tackled as the local agriculture promotion by the system to produce and sell the new farm products and improve the income of the farmers. Farmers market is a place of the interchange of a producer and consumer through farm products. Farmer market in Itoman had huge member from the farmers. Till the end of 2011 about 1200 farmers join in this market.
The fundamental principle of farmer’s market in Itoman, there were: (1) Assortment of fresh vegetable, (2) Seeing the face of the producers, (3) Giving food of security to consumers, (4) Sending a feeling in the four season, and (5) Developing of products and expansion of the marketing route.
In the night, Sakai sensei let us to eat Sushi and Ice cream in Okinawa. It was so delicious. Thank you sensei. We eat a lot, we laughed, and we are happy!
December 10nd, 2014
In the fourth day we went to Haebaru Clean Centre. This owner of this place is Naha City / Haebaru Town Administrative Association for Waste Treatment Plant. The people in Okinawa concern about the zero waste for environtment. They are recycling the goods that doesn’t proper. The rubbish also recycling in this place. The people should make different between combustibles (burn), incombustibles, cans rubbish, plastic bottle rubbish, and bottle. They have to separate the rubbish and then the Haebaru Clean Centre will take the futher process to recycle.
After that we went to the plant factory. Plant factory is a kind of horticulture system. In plant factory environtments can be controlled: for instance temperature, light intensity, and CO2 concentration. In Japan actually there were two kind of plant factory. One is Solar light and another is Artificial light type. The advantages of plant factory, there are: stability, environtment control, safety, and productivity. But, the disadvantage there are initial cost and running cost. In society, the were pro and contra about this plant factory. It’s a common thing.
In the night we had welcome party. All of the sensei, dean, the agriculture staff, and also students join in this party. We had delicious dinner. In this welcome party, we also performed some dance from Sumatera. It was my first experience of dancing. I love it give perform to them.
December 11th, 2014
In the fifth day, there were lectures day and explanation of group discussion. Sakai sensei open the letures and then he let Dr. Monchai and Dr. Faiz to give the lectures for students. Dr Monchai from KKU talked about the education in Khon Kaen University and Dr. Faiz talked about the education in IPB and also about Sustainability in Indonesia. It was so great information we get. We happy to know more knowledge from Sensei.
After having the lectures, so each of the students having their oral presentation about their research. I like that. In the afternoon, Sakai sensei divided us into two groups. In each group will talked about the problem of sustainable agriculture and the sollution.
December 12nd, 2014
In the sixth day, we went to the Recycle center. There were so many cars and also electricity that ready to recycle.
The mission of this company is creating a zero emission society. They concern about environtment. They recycle car, washing machine, drink machine, TV, etc. Before we continue to the next destination. Sakai sensei let us to know about Okinawan beach. I love it! Thank you Sakai Sensei. After we went to the beach and having halal dinner in Restaurant, then we went to the Orion beer factory. In this factory, the staff explain to us the process to make a beer. They explain from the materials for the beer, the process of fermentation, the packaging, until how to sell the beer in all Okinawa place. It was so great experience for me. I never go to the beer factory before. It was so cool factory that I ever seen.
December 13th, 2014
It was our last day in this Winter course. In the morning, we had some discussion about the sustainability agriculture. We discuss about the problems also the solution to make the agriculture sustain. The discussion begin to evaluate the problems that we already write down in two days ago. Then after that we make some slide of power point and make an oral discussion. It was so good discussion method. Its my first time did a discussion like that.
After the discussion, then we had a free time to sight seeing. Before we go out, Sakai sensei, The Dean Kawamoto sensei and all the staff give the Closing of the Winter Course. We get the certificate of the Winter Course from the dean and also get so many souvenirs from friends from Ryukyus. We were happy. I hope someday all of us can meet again.
We went to the Shurijo castle park and we got sunset there. The view was so increadable. It so cool! Fantastic! I hope I can go there again someday.
In the end, I would like to thanks to Sakai Sensei that always accompany us during the winter course. Sakai sensei and the staff work hard to create this awesome Winter Course. Thank you Sensei. Hope we can meet again, someday. Thank you….
I am really happy follow and join in the Winter Course 2014. Im really grateful be a part of this program. I got not only new friends from Ryukyus and also from Thailand but also a lot of experience I had. I learn many things new about technology in Okinawa, Okinawa culture, Okinawa landscape, agriculture, language, ideas, habit, knowledge from different study and so on. This is my first experience visited Japan. I amaze with all of the sensei gave. I hope someday I could back to Ryukyus as Phd. Students. I wish this cooperation will get futher advance. More students to come, more knowledge, more ideas. Wish me luck! Arigatou gozaimasuu sensei ^_^. Hope we can meet again in other chance.
